Greenlight Bookstore’s pick: “The Leavers” by Lisa Ko

Lisa Ko’s timely debut novel “The Leavers” examines the complex nature of assimilation and identity. The story follows Deming Guo, a boy abandoned by his undocumented immigrant mother, as he moves from the Bronx to upstate New York, changing his name to Daniel and occupying a dual-consciousness to cope with the muted, but persistent buzz of subconscious discrimination. This thoughtful portrait of a first-generation American thoroughly explores the impact of displacement and systematic racism — trauma without brutality — in both Deming and his mother, as she grapples with the mistakes of her past.

— Jean Lee, Greenlight Bookstore [686 Fulton St. between S. Elliott Place and S. Portland Avenue in Fort Greene, (718) 246–0200, www.greenlightbookstore.com].

Word’s pick: “Isadora” by Amelia Gray

Amelia Gray first novel, “Isadora,” a haunting portrayal of Isadora Duncan, the mother of modern dance, as she reels from the tragic drowning of her two young children. At the height of her career, Isadora is faced with this unimaginable loss and struggles to recover from the shock. Essentially abandoning her lover and family, Isadora turns to dance as a coping mechanism, becoming increasingly unhinged as she fuels her art with her despair. Gray’s feverish depiction of Isadora’s emotional upheaval is a visceral exploration into the effects of grief.

— Alison Gore, Word [126 Franklin St. at Milton Street in Greenpoint, (718) 383–0096, www.wordbrooklyn.com].

Community Bookstore’s pick: “The Friends of Eddie Coyle,” by George V. Higgins

I’m a bit of a tenderfoot when it comes to crime fiction, so it was with some trepidation that I took up George V. Higgins’s minor masterpiece. Turns out, “The Friends of Eddie Coyle” is not only a nasty diamond of ’70s noir, but a formally daring piece of dialogue-driven modernism, like a Henry Green novel, if all the characters were cutthroats and crooks out for an easy buck. Peter Yates made it into a very fine movie with Robert Mitchum and Peter Boyle, so double your fun some afternoon. As for me, I’m hooked.

— Hal Hlavinka, Community Bookstore [43 Seventh Ave. between Carroll Street and Garfield Place in Park Slope, (718) 783–3075, www.communitybookstore.net].

TREADWELL PARK DOWNTOWN The second of Abraham Merchant’s craft beer halls also has an outdoor beer garden: 301 South End Avenue (Albany Street), Battery Park City, 212-945-0528, treadwellpark.com.

Looking Ahead

PUBLIC Ian Schrager’s latest hotel, this one on the Lower East Side, will have several restaurants from Jean-Georges Vongerichten when it opens in about a month. Among the dining options will be the Public Kitchen, with a smoker, a wood-burning oven and grill, and a global menu. The hotel will also have a market and dining counter called Louis, with pastrami sandwiches, dumplings, a salad station and hot dogs, and a clubby bar and lounge with light food called Diego. The Roof, with views all around, will be a nightspot serving barbecue on weekends: 215 Chrystie Street (Stanton Street).

Chefs on the Move

LEE HANSON AND RIAD NASR, who ran the kitchen at Balthazar and Minetta Tavern, will be operating a summer pop-up called the Club Car at the McKittrick Hotel, starting Friday through Sept. 4. They will prepare a menu as summery as a sea breeze with lobster, crab, scallops and clams, and some meat items: 542 West 27th Street, 212-564-1662, mckittrickhotel.com.

PETER HOFFMAN, who closed his restaurants Savoy and Back Forty, will prepare his annual seasonal Catalan calçotada dinner, featuring grilled young leeks, spring lamb and white runner beans on Friday at Reynard, in the Wythe Hotel, 80 Wythe Avenue (North 11th Street), Williamsburg, Brooklyn; $115, including wine and tip: 718-460-8004, reynardnyc.com.

BEN POLLINGER, who left Oceana last year, will open a restaurant of his own, as yet unnamed, at 252 Schraalenburgh Road in Closter, N.J., in early fall. He described it as spacious, about 100 seats, with a bar area seating 40 and an outdoor patio for another 30 guests. He plans a contemporary American menu with global accents.

Closing

ISABELLA’S This longtime Upper West Side restaurant has closed after some 30 years.

SCHILLER’S LIQUOR BAR Keith McNally has announced that his Lower East Side restaurant, which made subway tiles a design statement, will close in August. The lease is up: 131 Rivington Street (Norfolk Street), 212-260-4555, schillersny.com.

FILE PHOTO: U.S. President Donald Trump waves as he walks on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, U.S., before his departure to Groton, Connecticut, May 17, 2017. In the past few weeks, the impeachment of Donald Trump has moved from the realm of liberal fantasy to real, if still distant possibility. The U.S. president violates democratic norms and expectations around presidential conduct. And with each fresh outrage, the American system’s ultimate political sanction becomes more thinkable.

If and when the House Judiciary Committee takes up the question of impeachment, it will have a running start. Legal scholars, including Laurence Tribe, of Harvard have begun work on sample articles in the indictment.

As during Watergate, there is broad agreement that the first article would be the obstruction of justice. By his admission, Trump fired James Comey as director of the FBI because of the probe into links between his presidential campaign and Russian interference in the 2016 election. Comey contemporaneously documented Trump’s request that he let go of the investigation into Michael Flynn, the president’s former national security adviser. Comey’s memos, combined with Trump’s admission, make a strong prima facie case.

A second article of impeachment might revolve around accusations of conflict of interest and corruption. Trump, who has neither released his tax returns nor properly separated himself from his real estate, hotel, and golf businesses, stands to profit enormously from his time in office.

Doubling the membership admission fee at his Mar-a-Lago resort (to $200,000) is a crude and obvious way of selling access while in office. The elevated rates paid by visiting diplomats at his new Trump International Hotel, just blocks from the White House, trigger the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution, a specific prohibition against officials receiving payments from foreign governments.

A historically grounded understanding of what the American founders meant by the phrase “high crimes and misdemeanors” arguably covers a much wider range of presidential abuses. Another Harvard law professor, Noah Feldman, argues that the president’s slanderous accusation that Barack Obama tapped his phones in Trump Tower constitutes an impeachable offense, along with Trump’s bilious defamation of the press.

A president cannot be criminally prosecuted for disclosing classified information, as Trump apparently did when he bragged to Russian officials about his fantastic intelligence on ISIS. But gratuitously harming national security by spilling secrets in this way is arguably an impeachable offense too.

The specifics of possible charges are somewhat beside the point. Whether impeachment hearings take place is ultimately a political question much more than a legal one. And so long as Republicans control the House, they remain unlikely. Since Trump became the GOP nominee, people have continually wondered whether this or that catastrophe would finally cause Republican legislators to break with him. Would the Access Hollywood tape, in which Trump bragged about sexual predation, be the straw that broke the camel’s back? Would his bigoted attacks on a Mexican American judge?

But the camel’s back is the wrong metaphor. Members of Congress are less beasts of accumulating burden than computational machines designed to win re-election. Their sense of their own political interests is acute. Thanks to gerrymandered congressional districts, a large majority of Republican House members hold safe seats, where the risk of losing to a Democrat is minimal. Their greater concern is a well-financed primary challenge from the right.

Only when legislators judge that the risk of continuing to support Trump outweighs the risk of abandoning him will they begin to jump ship. Their support is likely to hold firm so long as Trump’s approval rating among Republicans remains greater than 80 percent.

This political calculation should not be confused with loyalty—many Republican politicians privately feel (and express) contempt for Trump. The party’s greater loyalty is to a conservative agenda that includes tax cuts, deregulation, and the repeal of Obamacare.

If Trump comes to be seen as an obstacle rather than an avenue for that agenda, party leaders could turn on him. With scandals metastasizing and special counsel Robert Mueller at work, the prospect of a paralyzed presidency is growing.

At the same time, Republicans cannot simply decide they would be better off disposing of Trump in favor of the vice president. Were Trump to be forced from office, Mike Pence would take over in conditions akin to 1974, when the GOP faced public rejection after Watergate. The party leadership understands that there is no good scenario for the party that involves Trump leaving office before his time.

Impeachment becomes a more likely prospect if control of the House shifts in the 2018 congressional election. But even if Democratic efforts to focus the midterm on impeachment succeed, it takes a two-thirds vote in the Senate to remove a president from office. The ultimate decision about whether Trump serves out his term will remain in Republican hands.

What Next For WikiLeaks’ Julian Assange After He Pledges “War” and New CIA Documents Leaked: Report

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange issued a defiant statement after Sweden announced it was dropping its investigation into rape allegations against him.

“Today is an important victory for me and the UN human rights system, but by no means erases seven years of detention without charge…while my children grew up. That is not something I can forgive or forget,” Assange told journalists from a balcony at the Ecuadorian embassy where he has lived for the last five years.

Marianne Ny, Sweden’s director of public prosecutions, earlier said the investigation was dropped because Sweden had “exhausted the possibilities” for investigating the allegations against Assange.

But Ny stressed in her statement Friday that the investigation could be reopened before the statute of limitations on the case expires in 2020.

If Assange “went into British custody, then the Swedes may well revisit their decision … as extradition is suddenly easier”, tweeted legal expert David Allen Green.

Assange failed to answer a bail hearing when he took refuge in the embassy, resulting in an active warrant for his arrest by London’s Metropolitan Police, punishable by up to a year in prison.

Foremost of Assange’s concerns is possible extradition to the U.S., where he he could be detained on espionage charges.

In his statement Friday, Assange threatened further leaks of U.S, classified information, after reports last month that U.S. officials were preparing charges for Assange’s arrest.

“The U.K. has said it will arrest me regardless. Now the U.S. CIA director [Mike] Pompeo and the U.S. attorney general [Jeff Sessions] have said that I and other WikiLeaks staff have no rights and that my arrest and the arrest of other staff is a priority. That is not acceptable … Our publications are proceeding at speed and that speed in relation to [recent high profile leaks about the CIA] is accelerating.”

The Trump administration’s declaration that it intends to prioritize the arrest of Assange may surprise observers, after WikiLeaks released hacked Democrat emails that damaged the campaign of Trump’s Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton. However, Trump has stated his intention to pursue “leakers,” after a drip of damaging information about his presidency from U.S. officials.

Sweden’s decision came on the same day as WikiLeaks released a fresh batch of documents on the technological capacity of the CIA.

Assange’s lawyer Melinda Taylor told the Guardian: “I can’t say [Assange] will stay in [the Ecuadorian embassy] indefinitely, but I would hope that [events] won’t force him to do so.”

Ecuador has offered Assange asylum should he be able to leave Britain.

Guillaume Long, Ecuador’s foreign minister, pledged to help Assange Friday. “Given that the European arrest warrant no longer holds, Ecuador will now be intensifying its diplomatic efforts with the UK so Julian Assange gains safe passage [to] Ecuador,” said Long.

Kitchen 21 Brings Golden Age Glamour Back to the Coney Island Boardwalk

After an almost century-long fall from gracefrom NYCs premiere, upscale seaside resort and destination, to end-of-the-line depositary of sand-buried crack vials and louche carny holdovers like Shoot-the-FreakConey Island is well on its way to a full-blown resurgence (see the heralded return of Feltmans, the true forefounder of the Brooklyn hot dog).

It helps that the boardwalk remains littered with the landmarked shells of formerly grand buildings such as the Ford Amphitheater-adjacent complex that used to house Childs. Painstakingly restored by Legends Hospitality (Yankee Stadium) and Craveable Hospitality Group (of David Burke Kitchen), the turn-of-the-century expanse of beachside real estate is now enticingly occupied by Kitchen 21a collection of five interwoven restaurant concepts occupying a 150,000-square foot space.

And while you wont be turned away for donning a towel, each sector stands in stark, cultivated contrast to the assembly of fast food vendors and purveyors of yard cupped cocktails clogging the amusement park part of the beach.

The Parachute Bar

Set against arched windows framing Coney Islands iconic Parachute Jump, this sprawling bar spans the length of the restaurant, and boasts local spirit-based cocktails (a Not Your Fathers Egg Cream with Industry Vodka, and a Brooklyn 75 with Green Hook Ginsmith Beach Berry Gin,) as well as small production cans and bottles and 32 craft beers on tap.

Community Clam Bar

A must for any beachside locale, this is your destination for flights or growlers of beer (regulars are encouraged to bring their own in for refills), paired with panko-crusted oysters, mahi mahi tacos, lobster rolls on brioche buns, and the signature Raw Bar In A Box, a dry ice-chilled collection of littlenecks, local oysters, shrimp cocktail and cracked lobster, accompanied by pots of beet horseradish and pink peppercorn mignonette.

Test Kitchen

An in-house incubator for new dishes (to flesh out an established roster of grilled duroc pork porterhouse, surf n’ turf burgers, white clam casino pizza, and kale salad with marcona almonds and blue cheese), the Test Kitchen will also host a regular pop-up chef series, and collaborate with visiting winemakers, brewmasters and mixologists.

Coney Island Café

Sun and sand worshipers can avail themselves of this grab-and-go, quick service lounge and café offering coffee and breakfast items for early risers, and low key, beachy eats for the bikini-clad lunchtime crowd. Think arugula salad with summer melon, spinach and mushroom empanadas, and Mediterranean chicken wraps filled with feta, cucumber and olive tapenade.

Boardwalk & Vine

Not only does the view rival that of the nearby Wonder Wheel, you can keep your feet planted firmly on the ground (and your hands grasped around goblets of proprietary Vintage 21 wines, or crispy, teriyaki-glazed duck wings) at this ocean-abutting rooftop bar, perched high above the boardwalk.
