A waterfall in Bay Ridge!

This guy went chasing waterfalls!

cascade of rain water was streaming down a 76th Street staircase in Bay Ridge on Aug. 4, in the middle of an early morning thunder and lightning storm.

A Mill Basinite stopped in his tracks on his way to work at Fort Hamilton when he saw the torrent gushing from the top of the steps near Colonia Avenue at about 9 am it was a waterfall too peaceful to pass up, so he immediately got out his phone and started filming, said Howard Weiss.

I just looked out my rearview mirror and saw the waterfall coming down and I was like, What the hell is that? I need to record this, he said.

The flowing water may have looked tranquil, like one youd see in a tropical rainforest, but Weiss knew better than to go for a dip, he said.

I just wanted to sit there and let it all hit me, but I know its all dirty, said Weiss. I just sat there and recorded a video.

Jury convicts Sheepshead Bays Martin Shkreli

See this story at BrooklynPaper.com.

By Julianne Cuba

Brooklyn Paper

Sheepshead Bays least-favorite son Pharma Bro Martin Shkreli was convicted of fraud on Aug. 4, but the Most Hated Man in America still left the Brooklyn federal courthouse smirking, since the 12-person jury threw out most of the eight charges, including the most damning.

This was a witch hunt of epic proportions, and maybe they found one or two broomsticks, but at the end of the day, weve been acquitted of the most important charges in this case and Im delighted to report that, Shkreli said outside the Cadman Plaza courthouse on Friday afternoon.

The former hedge-fund manager gained infamy, and several of his nicknames, when he jacked up the price of a drug for AIDS patients from $13.50 to $750 per pill overnight in 2015, trolled a journalist and the popular hip-hop group Wu Tang Clan on social media, and made plenty of other crude comments across social media none of which he was on trial for.

Prosecutors charged Shkreli with eight counts of fraud for a Ponzi-like scheme, and the case kicked off at the end of June. The seven-woman and five-man jury began deliberating on July 31, and after asking the judge for just a few clarifications on the law on Aug. 1, they were relatively quiet until reaching the verdict.

The federal jury, kept anonymous, convicted the Sheepshead Bay-born-and-bred 34-year-old on three of the eight fraud counts he was free to walk on $5 million bond, and faces up to 20 years in prison, but no sentencing date has been set yet, and hes suspected to walk away with a much lighter sentence.

Shkreli took to his live YouTube channel just about an hour after leaving court with a cold bottle of IPA in hand talking out his case with viewers. Hes delighted, he told them, but still hopes he doesnt have to spend much time in the slammer.

No jail time would be definitely ideal, said Shkreli, who also said hes still extremely wealthy but doesnt think he wants to manage a hedge fund again.

And Shkreli isnt buying his title as the Most Hated Man in America as he told one of the viewers who asked him if he believed he still fits the name.

I dont think its me, if it was me Id think I have a few black eyes, said Shkreli, who famously auctioned off a chance to punch him in the face to raise money for the family of a recently deceased friend.

The government is still pleased with the jurys verdict.

An 81-year-old woman died and another person was seriously injured in a fire at a four-story brownstone in Brooklyn early Thursday, fire officials said. Residents of the building on Pacific Street in Crown Heights were forced to scramble out of windows for safety as the blaze ripped through the structure. I woke to the woman crying. Theyre awfully sexy: Strippers perform to worlds worst music

By Bill Roundy

Brooklyn Daily

Its going to be terrible.

At the Maim that Tune burlesque show on Saturday night, strippers will dance to the worst music they can imagine, including commercial jingles, inept ballads, and Toby Keith songs. The nauseating numbers chosen by the nearly-naked performers at the Sideshows by the Seashore theater in Coney Island on Aug. 12, will lead to an evening like no other, said its producer.

People are screaming and saying No! and clutching their heads and thats not the typical reaction to a burlesque show, said host and performer Fancy Feast, who reigned as Miss Coney Island 2016. It subverts the idea of what is a sexy night out.

This is Williamsburg performers third year producing the night of miserable music which sold out both of its previous incarnations. There is something cathartic about expressing your feeling about terrible tunes along with a crowd, said Fancy.

People think theyre alone in their hatred [of certain songs], but here they can get their ya-yas out, she said. It appeals to both sadists and masochists, so its a little something for everyone.

In previous years, dancers have stripped to the Mr. Softee jinglea mash-up of Smashmouths All-Star and John Lennons Imagine, and Garth Brookss Achy-Breaky Heart. But the objective badness of a song is less important to Fancy than the pain that each of the 13 performers go through while practicing their routines to music that they hate. Working through their revulsion can lead to a creative breakthrough, said Fancy.

Im always amazed to see what happens in a performers head when they are stuck with a song that they hate for a long period of time. It creates some pretty twisted striptease, she said. There have been several acts that have come out of this have gone into regular rotation in peoples acts.

Fancy would not reveal any of this years line-up, because the anticipation of waiting for the next song is part of the fun.

People are really waiting for the next track, to see if they really hate it or not, she said. There have been some moments of debate.

But she did reveal that two performers at this years show have chosen the same awful tune which she would normally not allow.

As a producer, on any other night, I would make them get a new selection, said Fancy. But for this show, some things are better heard twice, so people can really meditate on why the songs are so odious.

Pols celebrate new homes in Coney Island

Brooklyn Daily

Welcome home!

Local pols and community leaders snipped the blue ribbon, opening new below-market-rate housing Coney Island Homes in the eponymous neighborhood on Aug. 4.

The new Canal Avenue digs are part of a $4-million project that brings seven three-family homes to different locations scattered around the borough, to provide affordable homeownership opportunities to low-and-moderate-income families. The project helps a bunch of families stay in the neighborhood theyve grown up in and still love, said Assemblywoman Pam Harris (DConey Island).

All too often, we see families being forced out of their communities because of the increased cost of living, she said. Our community is special because of the people that put down roots here. Because of this great program, families will be able to start a life, raise their children, and build a bright future right here in Coney Island.

The new homes between W. 35th and W. 36th streets developed under the Department of Housing Preservation and Developments new Infill Homeownership Opportunities Program are a win for the community and its residents who will sign up for a new pair of keys, said Councilman Mark Treyger (DConey Island).

I am proud to support programs that create more opportunities for affordable home ownership in our community, especially when they involve turning empty lots into beautiful and resilient residences, he said.

Man fatally stabs woman in Bay Ridge apartment

Brooklyn Daily

A 42-year-old man fatally stabbed a 52-year-old woman inside a Bay Ridge Avenue apartment on Aug. 9, police said.

Emergency responders discovered the woman with stab wounds to her torso inside the apartment between Eighth and Ninth avenues at about 7 am, and pronounced her dead at the scene, according to authorities.

The man, who was taken into police custody but not yet formally charged, lives at the Bay Ridge Avenue apartment with two other family members who were there at the time of the murder — but they were not hurt, said Detective Michael DeBonis.

The victim was believed to have been renting a room in the apartment and living there with the suspect’s family, but it doesn’t appear that she was dating or married to him, said DeBonis.

“Unclear on what their relationship is. They were known to each other. We believe that the victim may have been renting a room from one of the other female occupants, but still unclear at this moment, still getting to the bottom of it,” he said. “Not believed to be husband and wife.”

Police recovered a knife at the scene and the investigation is ongoing, officials said.

Police did not release the victim’s name as of press time.

Unwell Donald Trump reduced to posting Twitter about whether hes better than President Obama

Donald Trump doesn’t seem to be having a good week. His showdown with North Korea has made him look ineffective and unstable. His campaign chairman’s house was raided by the FBI. His approval rating is at yet another new all time low. The entire world is making fun of him. It’s becoming more clear by the minute that he’s unraveling as we speak. And this morning he was reduced to posting a Twitter poll about whether he’s better than President Obama.

In what might be the saddest retweet of all time, Donald Trump took an already-completed Twitter poll from Progress Polls titled “Who is a better President of the United States?” and he retweeted it in order to brag about the fact that he had “won” the poll. Of course his “victory” by a 61% to 39% final score is merely a sign of how unscientific and lopsided the poll was, as numerous legitimate approval ratings polls show that Obama is more popular than ever, and that Trump’s support is now in the mid thirties.

Anyone can create a Twitter poll, and the results are going to be based entirely on who happens to see it. But don’t tell that to Donald Trump, who appears to honestly believe that his “victory” in this poll is a sign that Americans like him more than they like Obama. The funny part of course is that the poll included the “#ObamaDay” hashtag which had been originally created last week to celebrate President Obama’s birthday. So in effect, Trump just wished Obama a belated happy birthday without even knowing it.

Meanwhile the Quinnipiac poll has Donald Trump’s approval rating at just 33%, and the latest IBD poll has Trump’s approval rating at just 32%. But in his mind these professionally conducted polls are all “fake” while the random self-service poll he found online is legitimate.
